The September Shift: How to Finish the Year Strong Without the Q4 Scramble

A woman shifting from summer to fall.

By the second week of September, summer mode has to go. I hate this fact as much as you do, but we all know it to be true.

We've all been trucking along with longer lunches, lighter inboxes, a calendar with real white space in it, and a shared understanding around the office that the big stuff can wait until later.

Well my friend, later just showed up.

And it brought with it roughly sixteen weeks to hit the targets you set way back in June when the year still felt long. The chasm between summer pace and year-end pace is exactly where a lot of strong finishes fall down.

You don't fix that by white-knuckling your way through Q4. You fix it by switching modes on purpose, early, before the quarter sets the terms for you.

Here’s how to shift out of summer mode and finish the year strong.

1. Pick the finish line first

Before you make your to-do list, decide what a strong finish actually means for you. List the two or three outcomes you want done by December 31st. Be brutally realistic. My list could easily have ten things I want done by the end of the year. But that's not going to happen, so I'm applying a cold splash of reality and reducing it to three.

Write your big three down and place them somewhere you'll see them every day, because the list in your head loses to the loudest email every single time (you can learn more about that here).

From here on, everything competes against those outcomes, and that gives you the filter you need to prioritize effectively.

2. Count the weeks you actually have

Open your calendar and count the working weeks between now and year-end. Subtract the holidays, the December dead zone, any travel, and the week everyone mentally checks out between Christmas and New Years. The real number usually lands closer to twelve than sixteen (mine has come in at ten), and that changes how you plan. Map your two or three outcomes onto those weeks now, while you still have room to move things around.

A target without a timeline is just a wish, and wishes don't survive Q4.

3. Snap your routine back into work mode

If you’re anything like me, you’re feeling some reluctance in giving up your summer routine. The temptation may be to let it slide into October. After all, that's when Q4 officially starts, right?

No. No. No!

It’s time to buckle down.

Get to bed on time. Get back into your regular exercise routine. Plan your meals. Plan your outfits. If you can slip some kind of mindfulness routine in there, all the better. The sooner you do this, the quicker you’ll be up and running at full speed.

4. Tell people what you're driving

Don't make your team guess what you're focused on this quarter. Tell your boss the two or three outcomes you're chasing and ask whether they're the right ones. Tell your team so they route work to you accordingly. This isn't showing off, it's how people understand what you’re up to, and support you in doing it.

Also, and this is no small thing, it holds you accountable. If you say you’re going to do it out loud, to a whole bunch of people, you’re much more likely to get it done.

Now run the plan

None of this takes talent you don't already have. It takes one decision to leave summer mode behind on a specific day, and a plan you actually run. Pick your outcomes, count your weeks, clear the deck, reset your routine, and go loud about what you're building. That's how you turn sixteen ordinary weeks into a finish people remember.

The 6-Week Career Accelerator is for You

This course is built on a single, radical premise: you're not stuck in your career because of a lack of capability. You're stuck because of the invisible system of rules — both internal and external — that have been quietly shaping how you show up, what you ask for, and what you believe you deserve. These six weeks are about seeing that system clearly, choosing differently, and stepping fully into the great woman you already are.
